She couldn%u2019t place it, but it was close to the smell one gets when it rains after a period of dry weather; a smell caused by a healthy bacteria apparently, she had read somewhere.She moved the box out of the way and opened the door.There was definitely air coming up from the cellar. Something that had never happened before. Did it have something to do with the activity outside, she thought? Had their work chucking huge rocks down the hole caused some kind of subsidence between her cellar and what remained of the sink hole?She stood up, went in, and looked down the stairs. It was too dark to see anything. She had only been down there once before, and she%u2019d found it a musty and unforbidden place. There was a light switch somewhere. She looked around and saw it just inside, turned it on, and started down the wooden stairs.She reached the bottom of the stairs and saw it immediately%u2014the small bony figure, the very same looking one that had climbed into the bedroom window and had probably fucked her while she slept; he was there, all huddled up and shivering in the corner.She just stood and stared. The sight of seeing it so unexpectedly had stopped her thoughts. She saw the hole then. Some of bricks from the side wall were on the cellar floor.The creature never looked up at her despite the fact that the light going on should have alerted it. She studied it and realised it was shivering and shaking not because it was cold. It wasn%u2019t. The cellar, like everywhere, was still very warm. It was summer and a heat wave period, after all.The creature was terrified.She felt sorry for it and walked towards the diminutive figure. The The Sink Hole
