He could drain her blood which would make certain she was dead but he rejected the idea as new thoughts entered his head; he could just keep her%u2014see if she deteriorated in the course of time.Two weeks passed and the day of the funeral arrived. The vicar%u2019s %u2018black ops%u2019 men had brought over the remains of the corpse they had dug up at night in the church cemetery along with some of the broken headstone. Caroline was not in the coffin, those things were, all neatly bagged and fixed inside so as not to move around or produce smells. The body of the young woman was still in his basement which was always kept locked.The funeral went to plan and the coffin was lowered into the prepared grave. Caroline%u2019s family were all there at the graveside, with the mother crying and comforted by her husband. Job done, John Tucker retuned to his shop. Dawn was there in the front office. %u201cHow did it go, Mr. Tucker,%u201d she asked.%u201cAll good. That young lady is finally at rest,%u201d he told her.%u201cSuch a pity for such a young person. Life isn%u2019t fair, is it?%u201d Dawn said. John Tucker looked at her. Had she been crying? I went for an examination on my day off and I received a letter this morning.%u201dShe handed him the letter and he read it. What it contained was shocking and difficult to believe. It said she had pancreatic cancer of a type and nature that was incurable. There was nothing that could be done medically to treat it. He handed her back the letter, and she stood up and burst out crying uncontrollably. He took her into his arms and held her there as she sobbed into his chest.%u201cWe will get you an appointment at a private clinic, Dawn. The NHS is overwhelmed and understaffed.
