36Alan is a war hero. He had stepped on an IDE (improvised explosive device) when helping a woman and her children during his service as a soldier in the British Army. The device should have killed him. It didn%u2019t. Instead, it took away his legs and half his face.A once proud and caring man, he also lost something else, something inside of him; he lost his loving heart.Anyone encountering him felt at first, revulsion; his face missing a lip one side and half his lower nose; it was too much to bear looking into the eyes and a face of a gargoyle. After the first feeling, came one of pity, a desire to help make his life better. The third and final emotion the people encountering him felt, was that of horror, fear, and terror.Nancy felt none of this. Yes, she had learned of what he had done to another nun, and it was terrible. But he had never gone so far with her. Nancy saw the true man within, behind his embittered new persona. She felt for him. The Dean had allowed only her to receive him at the open nights of The Convent Of St. Mary%u2019s, in Faringdon. She had asked it of Dean Fredrick, as she desired to save his soul.Tonight is an open night and he%u2019s ushered in by a side door and allowed to use his electric wheel chair to go to her room, where she is waiting. Nancy hears the chair whirring outside. She stands up from the bed she%u2019s sitting on and walks over to open the door. recently had aids installed to help him as he had requested, and she is optimistic that he will be pleased with the strong metal handles each side of the bed bolted to the wall behind her pillows. The Dean had transformed the entire convent into a brothel served by the nuns. It was making a fortune and had saved it, and their religious, order from ruin and extinction. She is still a novice but she feels she can do much to lead the way. She opens the door and looks upon the man, Alan, that the sisters cruelly call %u2018Slime%u2019, but never to his face. All fear him. Only Nancy has no such feeling despite her youth and innocence.%u201cAlan, my war hero. Come in, please,%u201d she says with a smile. His face looks up at her, a gargoyle dripping snot and film from his half destroyed nose, and sheets of saliva falling like transparent curtains Chapter 1: A Hero Slime
